![]() The pair was almost finished writing the song when Tommy Mottola, president and COO of Sony Music Entertainment and Carey’s fiancé (later her husband), walked into the studio. ![]() And we went into an area that Mariah didn't really go into-in her words, it was a little bit too schmaltzy or too ballady or too old-fashioned as far as melody and lyrics. In her mind, we were writing a song for Gloria Estefan for this movie. Within two hours, we had this incredible seed for this song, 'Hero'. I was sitting at the piano and told Mariah about this movie. “I went to New York and we were in the studio and came to a break. At the time, the producer was working with Carey on her Music Box album. The film was screened for Afanasieff in Los Angeles and he was told that Gloria Estefan would probably be asked to sing a title theme. ![]() So they wanted to try the next best thing, which was to have us write something.” They wanted to have Mariah sing the theme to it, but they didn’t really think they could because at that time you couldn’t get near Mariah to do anything film-wise. Producer Walter Afanasieff recalls, “The people over at Epic Records were going to do the soundtrack for the film. Dustin Hoffman and Geena Davis starred in a movie for Columbia Pictures called Hero. If “Hero” sounds like it was meant to be heard over the end credits of a film, there’s a good reason. When I sing it live, I don’t sing it anything like the record, but I think it ended up, because the statement is so strong, being a song that was universal. It might have been produced and you know, more towards a middle of the road, mainstream way, it might have been some more towards that way, but I would have preferred to sing it differently. I was going to put a live version of Hero on the album, but they wanted me to just put the regular version. I like to sing ‘Hero’ live ‘cause it’s pretty easy to sing and I can do different things with it - I don’t do it like the record. “Mariah Carey: Revisited” by Chris Nickson, 1998 MC: “One person could say that 'Hero' is a schmaltzy piece of garbage, but another person can write to me a letter and say, 'I've considered committing suicide every day of my life for the last ten years until I heard that song, and I realized, after all, I can be my own hero,' and that, that's an unexplainable feeling, like I've done something with my life, you know? It meant something to someone.” ![]() ‘Hero’ is a song that’s basically about looking inside yourself and being your own hero, like not always having to look for some kind of hero to come along and save you, but you can save yourself by looking inside yourself and trying to making it through any situation by really just having yourself to depend on first and look up to, like being your own role model… Jet Magazine ‘Mariah Carey Says: My Mom Taught Me To Believe In Myself” by Robert E. She adds: "I do this because there is a lot of negativity out there and lot of people are singing about how screwed up the world is, and I don't think that everybody wants to hear about that all the time.” like with the songs Make It Happen and Hero," the singer/songwriter notes. "I like to try and give positive messages, if I can in my music, whenever I can. “‘Hero’ is about being your own role model,” Mariah explains, “about looking inside yourself to gather strength.” There’s not really one specific inspiration for the song, ‘Hero’ but the basic theme is looking inside yourself - being your own role model. ![]()

![]() ![]() As the game has a linear level design, all the puzzles have to be solved in sequence, so if you want to progress you have to grit your teeth and get through some of the tougher stuff. The odd couple did make me consider switching off the game and heading outside, but I realised I wasn’t kidding anyone and powered through. Move a block to progress, or even fling yourself across the map using a catapult (which is also a lot of fun to play around with). Human Fall Flat doesn’t quite reach this level of puzzle tedium a lot of puzzles are pretty basic, easy enough for the average video game player or those of us who have grown up with them. I love the Legend of Zelda games, but when it comes to some of the trickier dungeons, I groan, sigh and inevitably do a Google search for the walkthrough. ![]() I’ll be honest, I’m very hit or miss when it comes to games based around puzzles. Its an instant respawn, which makes the game all the more addictive and much more convenient to play. As every level in the game takes place in a floating island, once you fall off you immediately fall back onto the island from above. Usually the respawn time in some games can really put me off (hello, falling off Rainbow Road in literally any Mariokart game), but the developers found a way to beat this. What I really like about Human Fall Flat is that it is aware that Bob’s knack for falling off cliffs and accidental suicide can be a bit frustrating, given how often it happens. It’s extra fun when playing with a friend or family member and watching them mess up a jump or a pull-up, a function that would otherwise be easy if not for the clumsiness of the controls. It’s charming slapstick nature is what makes it so endearing to begin with and is one of its best features. They’re deliberately tricky to work with, as not only is it part of the game’s programming to make the puzzles so difficult to complete, but it also adds to the game’s comedy factor. Some may be put off by the game’s controls. There are enough puzzles and different environments throughout the game to keep your interest levels peaked, that is if you enjoy puzzle-based video games, of course. ![]() ![]() ![]() The overworld’s visuals resemble Gears of War in their greyish-brown defiled beauty, and bosses might remind you of God of War or possibly Shadow of the Colossus. There’s even a dungeon later in the game that borrows ideas from Portal, with an item that shoots orange and blue rifts at special targets. Beating a boss upgrades your life bar, and you literally collect the creatures’ hearts after besting one. Much of the gameplay is borrowed from The Legend of Zelda series, with dungeons that must be explored to find tools that aid in exploration and can also be used in combat. It gives Darksiders its own charm, kind of like a kid who’s trying too hard to impress you.ĭarksiders borrows heavily from some of the best titles in the action and adventure genres, and although it’s imitative, it comes together to be more than the sum of its parts. The use of Christian end-times mythology as a backdrop for the story works well, and the chunky, colorful Joe Madureira designs resemble decked-out characters in World of Warcraft. Everything is edgy and over-the-top there’s not a treasure chest in the game that doesn’t have at least three skulls in its design, and War’s enormous sword is known as the “Chaoseater.” Although this can feel overblown, it’s still fun. The story takes itself completely seriously, but there’s a disconnect between the heavy-handed narrative and the exaggerated visuals, and it can be hard to tell if Darksiders is being sincere or has its tongue planted in its cheek. He convinces the Council to allow him to return to Earth in an attempt to clear his name, but they bind him with a Watcher, a six-eyed demon that makes sure he stays on task. He’s knocked unconscious and wakes up before a tribunal, accused of being the one responsible for kicking off Armageddon too soon and dooming humanity. War fights his way through the streets until he comes up against a demon he can’t defeat, as it seems something is sapping his powers. As the game opens, War finds himself called to Earth as Angels and Demons fight their way through the streets of a nameless city, but the squishy humans who reside there are no match for either. War and his brothers act as enforcers for the Charred Council that maintains the balance between Heaven and Hell, keeping them in check until the third faction, humanity, is strong enough to provide a challenge to both sides. Apart from that, it’s worth noting that this remaster is strictly an aesthetic upgrade, and there’s no change whatsoever to the audio or gameplay.Įach of the Darksiders games tells the story of one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and the first centers on War. ![]() It fits in with the theme and tone of Darksiders, but it’ll probably be a turnoff to people who aren’t familiar with the concept. Let’s start off by acknowledging the biggest problem with Darksiders: Warmastered Edition that title is goofy as hell. Released: Novem(PS4, XB1), Novem(PC), TBD (Wii U) Darksiders: Warmastered Edition is the first release under this new branding, and it’s a great way to start things off.ĭarksiders: Warmastered Edition ( PC, PlayStation 4, Wii U, Xbox One) ![]() After purchasing the bulk of THQ’s IP, it rebranded its company as THQ Nordic earlier this year. Most people who’ve played Darksiders were probably disappointed that THQ fell apart before the planned quadrilogy could be completed, as the two games we got were both highly entertaining, enjoyable action titles.įortunately, the company that purchased the rights to Darksiders, Nordic Games, seems to be interested in keeping the franchise alive. Planned as a four-part series, the franchise only got as far as # Darksiders2 before publisher THQ declared bankruptcy in 2011, and its intellectual properties were sold off piece by piece. Darksiders was one of the last generation’s hidden gems, a dark, beautifully designed pastiche of several other action-adventure titles. ![]() ![]() ![]() ĭevelopers have no relation to Take 2 Interactive or Rockstar Games and do not bear any responsibility for possible negative consequences caused by the use of this product or any other products distributed with the library.
